Syria and Egypt dominated the news this week, with no shortage of news-worthy events throughout the region. Syrian government and rebel forces continued to clash, particularly near Damascus. Intelligence sources say the Assad government is preparing chemical weapons, which has alarmed the international community to prepare for a response. Events in Egypt grew bigger and more violent as the week progressed, with the president’s powers and the draft constitution causing a major divide. President Morsi sought to calm the situation with a nationwide speech Thursday but huge crowds were in the streets Friday. Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal is in Gaza to celebrate the organization’s 25th anniversary. And speculation continues about the royal family of Saudi Arabia – who is in line for the next leadership posts?
