As part of our ongoing coverage of pro-democracy protests in Bahrain, we wanted to address ongoing human rights concerns in the country in the context of the sporting world, specifically Formula One.  We previously posted an AT ISSUE debate on Bahrain in November entitled Bahrain’s Pearl Protesters – What Do They Really Want? It’s definitely worth a read or re-read, especially the comments.

Today’s debate:

AT ISSUE: Does Bahrain Deserve To Get The Formula One Grand Prix Back?

The Bahrain Grand Prix was scheduled to be the opening race of the 2011 Formula One season.  However, the race was postponed and later canceled because of civil unrest and because – as Sakhir Circuit Chairman Zayed Alzayani said at the time – it would cause “an unreasonable degree of disruption and cost.” The Bahrainis also paid around $39 million in hosting fees for last year’s race, and refused a refund from F1′s parent company Delta Topco.

In this debate, we would like you to consider the following facts and statements.

Drivers and organizers seem unconcerned about future unrest

- Formula One Supremo Bernie Ecclestone has said he has “no doubt” that the Bahrain Grand Prix will take place as scheduled on April 22nd of this year.  He told the Salzburger Nachrichten newspaper earlier this month that “Bahrain is the country in the region where there are the fewest problems.”
- Ex- Formula One driving champion Damon Hill has said he is in favor of the race going ahead.  He said this month that “a lot has changed” since last year and that F1 can go to Bahrain “with a clear conscience.”

- Bahrain race organizers said this month that the government has already acted to make sure no human rights are violated.  Organizers quoted a November report which found human rights violations in the Kingdom.  Race organizers also noted that the Grand Prix “forms a fundamental part of the local economy.”

- Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali says teams will have to “trust the official authorities” as far as what is going on in the country.

- Sky-TV in Britain announced that it would carry all 20 F1 races this year, including the Bahrain GP.

Activists say 2011 crackdown issues unaddressed

- The Bahrain Center for Human Rights – and particularly its chief Nabeel Rajab – say that abuses continue and staging the race would be a band-aid over the problem. Rajab was quoted as saying “The government wants Formula One to tell the outside world that everything is back to normal. . . Formula One, if they come, they are helping the government to say [it is normal] We would prefer it if they didn’t take part.

- Mariwan Hama-Saeed of Human Rights Watch said F1 should rethink the Sakhir race.  “I doubt that Formula One can be a success in a country where serious human rights abuses have been committed,” he said.

- Amnesty International has called for Bahrain to investigate more than a dozen deaths attributed to misuse of tear gas by security forces.

- Several Bahraini athletes – including basketball player Sale Mahdi, Drag Race champion Mohamed AlKhunaizi, and racing Marshall Sayed Hadi Nasser Alawi, who was sentenced to life in prison for murder and illegal gathering  — remain in jail.

-This month, the Bahrain circuit said it would welcome back all 29 people fired last year because they took part in anti-government protests.  However, media reports from the Island kingdom say only three of those employees have returned to work with some refusing the terms offered by the Bahrain International Circuit. The Bahrain ministry of labor has intervened on the employees’ behalf.

Protesters may re-energize, lots of money at stake

- Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat is a major shareholder in the McLaren racing team. Last year, several sponsors – including engine supplier Mercedes and tiremaker Pirelli – were not happy with missing the race.  If Mercedes decides not to go this year, several teams could lose their engines and if Pirelli boycotts the race, no one can run. Sponsors don’t like their names associated with reported human rights abuses.

-The race is tied to the Bahraini Royal family, particularly to the Crown Prince, who is a huge F1 fan.

So what do you think?  Does Bahrain deserve the chance to host a Formula One race in April? Please take part in our poll and add further facts and comments in the comment field below.

So three or four rabid regime supporters use this comment page to rant and rave and deny the reality of Bahrain. Nice. Well, you won’t have the F1 no matter how much you scream in print here. It just won’t happen. The international community (yes, Bahrain is part of that) has come to learn the truth of the extrajudicial killings, torture, and daily tormenting of the Shia people of Bahrain and also any liberal Sunni people if they dare to say one word about freedom.
No one wants to visit Bahrain under this regime, IT’S NOT SAFE. And by the way, if you haven’t seen the pics of people’s heads blown off, then you must have your eyes closed; they’re all over the place. Even a woman was shot in the head by your friends, the Saudis. Real nice place.

  • Missbahrain8

Plz dont support the murders. They are killing us everyway. I wish the f1 wont be return to bahrain.

  • Bu Ali

Bahrain is well protected by its people and the solid government. There should be no worries to visit Bahrain and it is safe by its wonderful synergized people. Never listen to misled media and in particular the Iranian’s such as Al-Alam and Press TV !!!

The brutal regime of Bahrain is trying to cover the truth by contracts with public relations companies.
To those who love car racing and F1.
The riot police and the army crackdown the peaceful protest at the LULU Roundabout in a very brutal way. Then they destroyed the cars of the protesters and stolen what was in these cars. Just watch this video http://goo.gl/HjdYP

Q to those who claim that Bahrain is a good place for F1, why does the Govt. deny access to human rights observers? http://t.co/X73GLiP7
Why did many employees of F1 were tortured and fired from their jobs, in suspect that they support the peacful protest?

  • Sayed14feb

The Govt. of Bahrain signed contracts for millions of dollars with Public Relations Companies to show Bahrain as a peaceful good country, while in fact the violence is continued in a daily basis. The regime employed thousands of mercenaries from Pakistan, Yemen, and Syria to crackdown the peaceful protest.
How can F1 race on the blood of people of Bahrain. Just read the reports of the main human rights organisations about Bahrain. Have a look at http://www.doctorsinchains.org to see the violations of human rights. Search in Youtube about Bahrain protest. See the facts about the situation, then ask yourself: Is it the right time to race in this country while ppl. are tortured to death, killed in streets, poisoned by gas… WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS CARE FOR US, NOT FOR F1.

YES, Bahrain wants F1!!!! It is a wonderful place and people are very helpful and kind, despite all pressure from “Big political games”. I have many friends different political beliefs, religions and we all love F1 event and vote YES! If you are not playing in this game, or being fooled by someone, get on with your life, get a good job, marry beautiful girl, have wonderful children, get your family together and have a family day out @ F1 – this is you life, this is your history. The rest is bullshit.

  • anonymous

everything u said iran.. iran this, iran that . bahrain doesnt have any prove that iran is involved and that protesters are also saying iran aren’t involved… and still they want to accuse iran!!!!!

  • Ybuali

people are killed, beaten and tortured just because they are asking for their rights and democracy pls no dignity for the majority of bahraini .our mosques have dimolished many employes been dismissed for nothing only they asked for democracy kindly help us we need every single stand plz dont hesitate

    • Bahrain Debate

YBuAli, how do you ask for democracy when you don’t understand democracy as a definition that’s only broadly interpreted by western media?

Western Democracy should not be the Bahrain democracy model, adopting a Swedish or Danish styled democracy is going to make your children curse this generation.

  • Mahmoodali522

NO!! is there like 65 killed by the goverment and latest one was yesteryday!!! please respect that

  • Mohammed

Bahrain is a great country.. Yes we have problems but why do we need to stop living. Sports is fun! should we not have fun in our lives anymore ? Yes to F1 in Bahrain !

  • Ghadaalansari

this is a sporting event ! dont understand why it is linked to political issues. We have had so many other sporting events since Feb 2011 and all were successful.. Dont mix sports with politics!

  • Halwai Muharraqi

Just a small note for everybody worldwide,
These  people who are destroying propoties, using molotoves, blocking roads bllindly following their masters in Iran, anyone can respect them or belive them.
If they are realy think of Bahrain and what is good for Bahrain, they should fighting to get the F1 at BAH because it brings a very good income for the country but they looks only for what is good for Iran and Iran followers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mohammed-AlDawar/726421356 Mohammed AlDawar

Stop the Killing , torture , abductions , group punishments by filling the residential areas daily by toxic gases. release all political prisoners , break the military siege on the hospitals and private practices which prevents injured protesters from getting treated. reinstate all illegal sacked employees including 26 of Bahrain International Circuit staff . then we would agree on having F1 so all would be happy !!

by the way the toxic (and i mean toxic not tear gas) CR/CS gases killed alredy 15+ people including 6 days infant and 81 years old woman. just yesterday 2 people died as a result of inhaling these gases thrown at their homes while no protests in streets were taking action

PS: those gases reached to the tourism areas very frequently recently. so its your choice

    • Bahrain Debate

The tear gas could stop once you stop calling a roundabout a square ;-)

  • Aljowder

Not true that people are killed in Bahrain .. There are terrorists, and they burn ,, but well in most areas of Bahrain, Bahrain Yes, able to host a Formula or any other international event. They just hosted the International Air Show

  • APenguin

If you simply check the source of the hatred replies against the Formula1 u’ll find them all outside of Bahrain, all Bahrainis want the Formula1 and welcomes it .. An international investigation unit from UN has found no evidence of torture anywhere within the F1 premises nor anywhere on the island, another F1 committee has also visited the country and found those mercenary thugs from Shiites are burning tires and terrorise and they were captured, please check your sources and open your eyes.

  • Moumtaz S. Fokeladeh

Stopping the passive aggressive losers who keep their mouth opened either waiting to be fed or complaining while they do nothing to help themselves, is an obvious contribution to the build up of this country. F1 is beyond their limited imagination, and should not stop anyone who understand its importance for the reanimation of the economy, and the induction of related activities, from supporting the tremendous efforts that were made to bring it and the new ones to bring it back.

  • http://twitter.com/HappyDarkSpirit HappyDarkSpirit

wow does westerners still think people are being killed in Bahrain , do they even have have any media there or they just don’t like to report the riot and the Molotov movement !!!

you want media attention go watch the massacre happening in Syria for the past year

  • Heal Bahrain

I am disgusted by all the negative comments here and I’ll bet half of these people don’t live in Bahrain and have never set foot on the island.  Bahrain has made great strides over the past 10 years, you only have to look around the place to see.  People are being brainwashed by media reports which are totally one sided.  Don’t be fooled by these reports, the majority of people want the F1 back. The majority of Bahraini’s are peace loving and lovely people, but there is a faction of unruly delinquents who are hell bent on destroying the island just because they are being paid to do so by religious clerics who have more allegiance to Iran than to our King.  Coming to the F1 will not get your head blown off as the moron below says. It will be perfectly safe, hence the drivers of F1 know it is safe to come here.  There is a huge drive to heal Bahrain and most people want to unite, but like I said, a small group of brainwashed youths are causing all the problems and their only agenda is to kick the ruling family out and bring Iran in.  Before you comment on whether or not the F1 should return to Bahrain, make sure you actually live here and know the history of this wonderful island.   And before any one starts, I live in one of the villages and am subjected to nightly disturbances of vandalising thugs throwing molotovs at our policemen who are just carrying out their duties to protect the nation.  Yes, they use tear gas to disperse these unruly youths but then so does the UK, the USA and many other countries.  The country is putting into place many reforms to alleviate the past problems and some are already in place. Don’t compare Bahrain with the problems of Syria, Libya, Egypt and other Arab countries, it just isn’t like that here. If you want to know about what goes on in Bahrain, ask someone who has lived and continues to live here for many years.  Don’t be a lemming and follow the media’s distorted view of this country from their 24hr stop-overs, their reports are done to gain ratings as well as awards.   As any reporter will tell you…never let the truth get in the way of a good story!

    • Aminajameel

      WE WANT F1!!!F1!!!!F1!!!!!

  • Wpeppinck

In Bahrain, serious steps have been taken to address the issues raised by what happened in Feb/March 2011 including a warts and all report from an independent inquiry such as 99% of countries would never allow. The debunked Nabeel Rajab and his defunct HR organization (now coming to you from Lebanon) keep trotting out the same hackneyed clap-trap and would have you believe nothing is happening. Rubbish. What ‘disturbances’ we have now has little to do with political protest, it is mindless VANDALISM such as most countries would not tolerate (“Peaceful protesters” with Molotov cocktails?? Think about it PROPERLY) Most Bahrainis are now FED UP with this disruption to their lives and are calling for the now ‘softly softly’ police to take firmer action and arrest people so that others who are genuine about wanting change, can be allowed to get on with their negotiations, because the King and the Government ARE LISTENING. This is not yet one man one vote territory a la the West  where democracy has devolved over hundreds of years, but Bahrain has moved further towards a broader democracy than any other country in the region bar Israel, and did so well in advance of any “Arab Spring.” Ecclestone and Hill are right, there are visible changes, torurers have been arrested, the Head of Security dismissed and there are on-going  independent investigations on deaths in custody. Most sacked workers have been reinstated – many people who just walked off the job without a moment’s thought to how business enterprises would continue in their absence, or after submitting leave proposals – yet the bulk have been taken back. And if they find that caused tension in the workplace, or if they find their jobs filled by others and they now have different work (at the same pay scale), TOUGH. That is human nature. YES, Bahrain should get its GP back, for the benefit of ALL Bahrainis.  Winnie

    • Habib Shuaib

      Well said… agree 100%

  • Robert

The GrandPrix is a positive showcase fro Bahrain in which everyone comes together and celebrates a global event engaging many cultures. It is part of the positive side of Bahrain and is part of the move to modernism and a world perspective .
It should not only go ahead as a sporting event but as part of the healing for Bahrain.
    YES

  • Bahrain Debate

Just looking at the spelling mistakes in the comments here shows who is a government supporter, a member of Al Wefaq or the BCHR and your ordinary Bahraini or local resident.

    Go figure!

The FIA management have already spoiled the spirit of F1 by allowing political interference to occupy this global sport. Instead of just focusing on hosting the sport in countries who are their race partners, they have last year decided to get politically involved with their response to Sakhir race-track.

Coming to Bahrain or not is now pointless, because they have lost their different partners’ confidence worldwide – next time a country will think hard many times before deciding to allow FIA management to build a F1 sporting facility for their lack of ethics.

There is talk much of the time that Iran interferes in Bahrain and Kuwait and that they occupy certain lands belonging to the UAE, this is now similar to the FIA, F1 has been made no different to Iran’s games.

Bahrain’s leadership should tell the F1 management to find another venue so they can interfere with another country’s internal affairs.

Reading through some of the comments on this site I wonder if the writers are on the Planet Earth! Such drivel written about Bahrain. The world outside Bahrain needs to understand that most of what they read is absolute lies concerning the Government here and the so called ‘peaceful protesters’. Come to Bahrain and see how these peaceful poor Shias are burning and bombing and destroying everything they can in the name of their ‘peaceful protests’…their religious ‘leaders’ incite them to kill and maim police who are trying to restore order and protect the rest of the population. They are mere puppets in a dangerous and evil game being played out by our neighbours.
I have lived in this country for 40 wonderful years and it is painful to see how these thugs and layabouts  are trying to bring Bahrain to her knees…and not one of these idiots would have the first clue how to run the country if they had the chance anyway.

By the way if F1 happens government does not make anymoney as there are no tax Bahrainis or businesses pay. All money made from the event goes into the economy into the general population.

The PROTESTS have lost their ligitimacy…. because its been going on for 1 year, without any consideration for the National Economy?

Nobody would accept such selfish Opposition, at any cost?

Only Traitors would accpet it, or agents of the ENEMY. Iran is not far from the Shiite so called pro-democracy opposition?

      • Bahrain Debate

What happened in Bahrain last year was an obvious distraction orchestrated by the current government in Iran to influence global public opinion to overlook their own backyard slaughter houses in Tehran.

Unfortunately, that has terribly back-fired on the powers that be in Iran, now Iranian oil is cheap to buy thanks to China, India and Russia :-)

      • Bu Ali

Oppositions!!!!!  This is unlikely to be true !!!! Those are called betrayers of the country and NOT Oppositions. The real opposition would work to the best interest of the country and will compete to how to serve the country in the best way!!!

never has one sport in Bahrain divided the have from the have not. this sport have become the symbol of the alkhalifa and the selected few division of classes. as former a fan of the sport I stopped watching after the first season after attending and seeing how the sport divided us.

  • Wordlife4arab

    • Beaceful Brotestor

Yeah what about the so called peaceful protesters who throw Molotov cocktails on police and throw nail darts on the, I have seen police being attacked in front of my eye’s by so called activists, what about blocking major roads with burning tires and trash bins, I ask you is the way to solve problems, please don’t talk about human rights abuses when your own people are doing the same.

Doing F1 in Bahrain means supporting the criminals of Al Khalifa………The least support is boycotting the brutal regime until the people’s demands are met

      • Salabandan

People are demanding their Rights and stop Running over and Over the beaten up police men. Over 60 innocent soul where killed by the police and no one condemned the Cowered Heartless Brutal Police of Bahrain. People are not stuped and all information is available on the net. Have Sence

  • Rashed Mohd

I am sure Bahrain and its people would like the F1 back. All those people who are making Bahrain a disastrous place are not living in the country. I am living in Bahrain, I go to work everyday, & I take my family everywhere in the island. Me & my family enjoy lots of activities: study, social, sport, camping, fishing, and many other fun life everyday. We have never been bothered by anything. I do not know what those people are talking about! Please come to this peaceful island and see for yourself the beauty of it and its people.

    • F1FanBH

I agree with what Rashed Mohd posted, we all want to carry on with our lives and move on by fixing the issues and progressing. The rioters are doing the exact opposite and are doing nothing to help Bahrain. The country is safe and so many International events have already happened including the Jewellery Arabia exhibition, the International Boat Show, the Garden Show, and the Bahrain Air Show. All of these events mainly have International exhibitors and they all were very successful, so I can’t see a reason for the Bahrain Grand Prix not to go ahead.

      • Salabandan

The rioters are not not asking for Palaces and fancy cars all they are asking is for a BIT of Dignity and to live like the rest of the world
The Shows you stated were a FAILURE IN ACTION Non of the was a success and to see that for yourself just go to Google and type any of the stated shows or even better look what the Bahrain Government Newspaper say about these Fancy Shows……. ALL SAY A COMPLETE FAILURE EVERY SINGLE SHOW YOU STATED ABOVE ……This is from Government Officials

        • Beaceful Brotester

          Nonsense!

        • Robert

It is people like you who perpetuate this sectarianism  dressed up in “peaceful” protest speak. You don’t know what you are talking about.

        • Heal Bahrain

Salabandan – what rubbish you talk. Why don’t you just get on with your life like the rest of the world?  Your people have a lot more given to them by the government than a lot of other countries.  Hard done by? My backside!

        • Bahrain Debate

How much is Nabeel Rajab paying you to post negative comments about Bahrain online?

Hope whatever you are being paid is enough to afford a lawyer to defend any future libel cases brought against you ;-) (chappati or kubus money won’t cut it any longer)

        • Aminajameel

HELLLLOOOOOWWW!!SALABANDAN!!IM NOT FROM GOVERMENT OFFICIAL,,IM JUST A SIMPLE WOMAN,,,LIVING IN BAHRAIN,,

      • Aminajameel

        we want F1!!!!F1 F1 F1 F1 F1 F1 F1 F1 F1 FFFFFFFFFFFFFF ONE!!!!!

    • Salabandan

      • Robert

Let anyone reading this Salabandan’s ravings and nonsense be assured this is at best a distortion but in reality a continuation of the rhetoric that is misleading the world.  I am a professional working in this country now for some years and YES there are things to be fixed but there are in any country. Bahraini’s are on the whole loving family people who want the best for their kids and families.  They got swept along on the promise of change but  their enthusiasm has been distorted and misrepresented by people such as so called Salabandan who are in fact is a voice for the very people who support and perpetuate the vandalism and hooliganism of gangs of young thugs.
Peaceful protests???  What rubbish and lies.

      • Habib Shuaib

        Not TRUE

      • Bahrain Debate

If Bahrain is not safe as you claim, what are you doing there? Leave!

Bahrain is the most safest country in the world, but of course ignorant people like yourself haven’t seen the world to understand that.

    • Rsdt

and you don’t care for human rights ? Because it’s not your kid not your job.

      I see your logic.

      • Bahrain Debate

The logic is that if you as a parent raised your child properly and taught them that rioting is a crime, but raising grievances through legal and appropriate channels is correct, not only would you be promoting human rights and upholding them but the community would follow your parenting example and offspring as a role model – that is the logical train of behavior (Rsdt).

The way that the Bahrain regime uses the GP F1 as a tool of propaganda is the main reason it should not take place. The track employees who were tortured in the building of the racetrack itself, haven’t been compensated and their families suffered terribly for it. The regime & their PR lackeys in the US just keep churning out lies to the press that some people believe, for some reason unknown to me. Even a cursory look at the situation in Bahrain shows the egregious human rights violations occurring daily. F1? Laughable. Thank the US Dept of State for the ongoing atrocities in Bahrain and for the fact that they’ve somehow managed to keep it out of the mainstream news in America.

    • F1FanBH

This is not true, no one was tortured in the building of the race track! A false claim was made and some articles wrote about it based on false claims!

      • Gfhj

Like Bahrain government kept saying no torture took place at all and then it was proven torture did take place. Remind me the BICI started on after 3 months from the March attack on the roundbout so they tortured people for three months and denied it that long before even considering to bring BICI to invistigate.

Even while it was there it did not stop it’s abuses.

I say play in your room and watch the bahraini government lays more.

      • Salabandan

Just go to Human Rights Organizations and see how people where tortured Or Even better read about torture in your OWN OFFICIAL NEWSPAPERS

        TURTURE IN BAHRAIN

  • down with Hamad

    Down with the dictator

  • http://twitter.com/Proud_BH Proud Bahraini

before I vote, would you do any thing to support Bahrains demands if the vote shows most of people don’t want F1 before human rights are are committed?
